Our Visiting Volunteer program.

  • Friendship.

Our Visiting Volunteer program connects older adults and volunteers for in-person visits at least twice a month. To foster meaningful connections and lasting relationships, we ask participants to commit to the program for at least six months. All matches are thoughtfully made based on shared interests, allowing friendships to develop naturally over time.

  • A little extra.

Beyond regular in-person visits, some volunteers choose to provide additional support based on their skills and interests. This may include taking an older adult on an outing or offering small help that complements family and friend support. Additionally, all volunteers serve as advocates, reporting any concerns about older adult’s health and well-being to LBFE staff.

  • Getting started.

Before being matched with an older adult, prospective volunteers must complete a background check and attend a virtual orientation. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by an adult.

  • What they're saying.

Year after year, more than 75% of older adults in the Visiting Volunteer program have reported that their participation has supported them in developing a meaningful friendship with their matched volunteer, decreased their feelings of loneliness, and enhanced their feelings of connection. Furthermore, close to 50% of all matches have been matched for more than 1 year.

This no-cost program is made possible in part by the support of the San Francisco Department of Adult and Aging Services.
