See how our work supports San Francisco’s older adults.

  • More than 50% of older adults aged 60+ are at risk of social isolation. The health consequences of prolonged isolation and loneliness includes a 29% increased risk of heart disease, a 32% increased risk of stroke, and a 50% increased risk of developing dementia, in addition to increasing the risk of premature death by more than 60%.

  • We offer services otherwise unavailable through public agencies. We serve our community through outreach, advocacy, and companionship. In effort to reduce isolation and loneliness among older adults, we offer social interaction and increased connectivity to the outside world.

  • We do not receive any regular state or federal funding. Our work is primarily supported by individual donors, corporations, and foundation grants. We currently receive partial funding for our Visiting Volunteer program from the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS).

What’s happening.

In February 2024, we celebrated our collaboration with For You. Productions with a major donor event, Still Blooming: An LBFE Art & Appreciation Event. Our partnership with For You. – Artists & Elders – connects LBFE older adults and local artists in a creative exchange. This drawing was created by Emiko M. (69) and Jennifer Z. and shows the artistic bonds fostered in Artists & Elders.

Our annual fundraiser and cocktail party, Cheers to Connections, held in September 2024 was a smashing success! We exceeded our fundraising goal, raising $23,891 through our raffle, Fund-a-Need, and sponsorships.

“I work with so many nonprofits and I really love LBFE. You guys are top notch. You mean so much to the people you serve. The people here hang up the birthday cards you send. You don't know how much they appreciate it."

Andy M., older adult

“She is a wonderful volunteer in every possible way. I’ve met some of the nicest people in all of my 93 years through LBFE, and now I have a few regular volunteers who I consider to be good friends!”

Anita S., older adult

You guys have sent me people that are just, fantastic. I don't know how you do it but it's like you've put our DNA together and it just works. Each and every one of them that you've sent, it's just been fantastic.”
