 | Sankofa
African-American Diversity Program, the concept of SANKOFA is derived from King Adinkera of the Akan People of West Africa. SANKOFA is expressed in the Akan language as “se wo were fin a wosan kofa a yenki.” Literally translated it means “Always remember the past for therein lies the future, if forgotten.” Visually and symbolically “SANKOFA” is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backwards with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth.

 | Torogoz
Latino/a Diversity Program, Torogoz is the national bird of El Salvador and is a beautiful bird with a variety of brightly colored feathers. However, as a bird of freedom and beauty, it does not adapt well to captivity. The Torogoz is the symbol of family unity because its species as a whole participates in the care of their young and elderly.
