Volunteer Opportunities: Our Programs

Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly is a volunteer-based organization. Both individual volunteers and groups from community, civic, religious, corporate, and business organizations work to help elders through a variety of activities, ranging from packing gift baskets and preparing food during the holidays to driving an elder to a special event or spending an hour visiting. Little Brothers staff members facilitate these activities by training, recruiting, and monitoring volunteers. See the highlights of our major programs below and become one of the hundreds of Little Brothers volunteers who have discovered that embracing an elder friend is as enriching for the volunteer as it is for the elder.

The Visiting Volunteer Program is Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly's largest, most established and most important program. This program matches a volunteer with an "elder friend" in order to create a friendship that we hope will last a lifetime. Volunteers make a one-year commitment to visit their elder friend at least twice a month. Currently Little Brothers staff provides support to more than 200 elder/volunteer matches.

Special Events and Parties are planned every month or two for Little Brothers elders. This program allows between 20 and 50 elders to socialize with other LBFE elders and volunteers. The parties always involve lunch and great conversation and usually involve games, singing, dancing, and more! We are always on the lookout for volunteers who can help out at these events with set-up, cleaning and serving food. We also need drivers who can escort elders to these events. Drivers are covered by our insurance after they fill out an application form and a DMV clearance form.

Holiday Celebrations and other special occasions are marked by both in home visits and out-of-home events. These visits are especially important during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season which is traditionally a time of sharing with family and loved ones. Each year, over 1,000 volunteers serve more than 500 elders during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Additionally, Little Brothers holds at least one home visiting event or outing each month, and volunteers are needed for these occasions.

On-Call/Medical Escort volunteers drive elders to medical appointments and escort them home again. A car is helpful but not necessary for taking part in this flexible program. Orientation/training is provided once a month at the LBFE office. Volunteers are contacted at least a week before their help is needed.
